James Markus is voted "Tops in GR" in the Photographer catagory
Wow, I don't know what to say. I didn't even know mlive and the Grand Rapids Press were
running a poll the last two months of 2008 - let alone that I appeared in that poll. Thanks
for the votes!

Nikon releases the D3X a 24.5 megapixel Camera at $8000 MSRP
When you release a high pixel count camera into a market that now has three other models
within that category...and two of those models are about $2800. Coupled with your reduced
R&D by re-using a proven great body (the D3) + you want market share, and as many sales
as possible...then naturally you would pick a competitive price. You can't pretend you are the
only kid on the block with such an offering. Canon used up that cache all by itself...and it is
gone forever...barring some other techno development. I honestly think the D3X is over priced,
and that does not make it a good value in my opinion.

Nikon will sell D3X's, but they could have sold a lot more. They could have put even more
pressure on Canon for market share. They could have made a compelling argument that
Nikon was the leader, and best value in this category. If the price (MSRP) had been like
ALL the other "X" cameras ($5000-$5500) it would have been a continuation of the wonderful
moves made over the last year. This stalls that. Instead, they make the marketing leap (and
it is a huge leap) to claim medium digital format IQ with a non medium format sensor to justify
a price. It may perform at the low end of MF, but lets not kid ourselves. I think Nikon's adoption
of Canon's pricing model is being interpreted as greed by Nikon users, and that is damage to a
brand to which I am a fan.

As of January 2009 the early adopters of the D3X are claiming it has the best image quality of
any DSLR on the market.

James Markus Photography llc is a reality!
I made my goal of opening within a month of leaving the Grand Rapids Press - barely.
My muscles ache all over from moving furniture, building frames, printing huge prints,
setting up computers/software, painting walls, and spending lots of money. (They say
you have to spend money to make money - I'll report back on that one.) I want to thank
my wife and kids who donated lots of energy, and effort into making this all possible.
